I don't know how much land you have exactly but I wold average our speedball course to be about the size of a basketball court which of course is set up with inflatable obstacles. I don't spend much time on it however.
Being a woodsball player myself, I prefer the outdoors. An area with alot of tree cover is ideal, but you would want atleast 3 acres for that type of play.
There are other scenerios that we do which you may be able to utulize though:
1. Convoy: One of my favorites. The ambushers are usually a smaller unit and they go hide somewhere along the road. We use my truck for the convoy truck and usually you have the driver and captain up front in the cab, 2-4 people in the back and 2-4 people escorting in front or in back of the truck depending on overall people playing. The objective is complete kill for either team. In most cases the ambushers have the advantage and the suckers in the bed of the truck usually get creamed right off. I'm in the process of building a shell that will house a double trouble so that may change soon.
Sniper: Send 2-4 guys into the woods and give them 10 minutes to set up. At that point the 'squad' goes out into the woods on patrol. It's all a matter if you see where the shots come from.
Bunker buster: Our main outdoor field consists of 2 bunkers. Theres trees on one side, the river on the other side, and the middle is cluttered with foxholes. This has been a very fun location for a long time. Capture the bunker at night is way fun cause one minute you think your alone and the next minute theres a shadow standing right in front of you.
Our paintball place also has a indoor course which consists of hollow buildings (basically just the front wall), tire bunkers, and a couple of old cars in the middle. If you add more walls to the buildings so each is individual then you may see some real fun action there. It's awesome when your sitting in the deadman box and you see 2 players of opposing teams on both sides of the wall and they don't have a clue that the other is right there.
You can also set up for a mini-Normady. Just setup one bunker with a couple of auto's or a double trouble and have people rush the complex.
We also have a area that fields giant boulders and that's quite entertaining also. _________________________________________________________
With the area in mind you can also adjust each scenario.
Medic: Each team gets a medic. When a person gets shot they yell medic or coreman and the medic taps em on the shoulder which brings them back in. If the medic dies, your screwed, so you wanna protect that medic with your own life at all costs. Once the other team figures out who the medic is then thats their main target.
Chaos: Scenario where everone starts on their own team. Everyone turns 180 and walks out until the captain yells paintball. When a player shoots you, you become part of their team. If another player shoots you, you join that team. If they shoot the man who shot you, both of you join the other team and you still part of the first guys team. Eventually everyone ends up on the same team. Good warm up game.
3 man deadbox: This is generally used in capture the flag. When the deadbox fields 3 people they can run back onto the field. Really makes a difference in 40 man games when your flank suddenly has a bunch of people. ___________________________________________________________
For the most part try to make multiple small fields maybe surrounding 1 large one and have each contain a different environment which will appeal to your customers. Also invest in lots of netting so stray shots don't fly into the other zones.
If you really want to go crazy set up a building for a staging area where people can put their gear. You can also buy a crapload of stock '98s and cheap masks to rent (you want a disclaimer for the smaller kids though)

Scrubbrush makes decent cover too. I can't tell you how many times I've hit the deck while taking fire and actually manage to sneak right up to the shooter through scrub.
A very simple type of cover to make that you can move is basically half a pallet supported by two 2' plywood boards for side protection. You can make a ton of these and each can hold 2 people (5 if your all in trouble and don't mind cuddling.) If you use hinges to connect the boards to the half pallet the you can simply fold it up and move it to where ever.
Also for a more static defense you can hit up the junk yard and collect tires for tire bunkers. Cheap and they tend to leave holes to shoot out of.
EDIt: and that old road you could use for convoy granted theres ample places for the ambushers to hide. You won't be driving very far so you don't have to worry about going the full distance.

Your speed ball course will be flat with turf or rubber matting (whatever that crap is that they put down). No trenches or anything.

How about really hard packed dirt?
Might work for a while. Only reason why I say the matting is because watching the speedballers here they have a fetish for sliding behind bunkers. They love sliding. And if you look at their little specially made suits there are parts on the pants made with hard plastic that helps with the sliding. I think as long as it's level you shouldn't get many complaints.

Relativly simple to make, is the best thing for speedball courses inflatable barriers/cover so their easily moved around and whatnot? Should I have any trenchs or anything for a speedball course, or just stick with the mobile blowup obstacles.
Then, build the more complex scenario field/compartments, I will just have two seperate fields, the speedball field, then the large scenario area with the permanent bunkers.forts, with a few movable barriers and entrenchments dug out.
Lastly, construct the main building, where admission will be charged, stuff will be stored, rentals will take place, yadda yadda yadda. I am not going to open it until I have everything completed, this is not going to be my main source of income, nor am I going to be losing huge sums of money in the building process, this is for just a little income on the side, and to give people a fun place to play.
EDIT: I need to know what a fairly standard speedball field size is,what length by what width.
Inflatable obstacles only. Don't forget the snakes! Last indoor place I played at, the best action was from people crawling and diving behind the snake.
yeah, ours had the snake too. It was on one side of the field and the triangles were on the other side. Then we've got 2 large obstacles (close by the triangles.) while the other side had like a giant X and other smaller cover.
And like I said, the field we have is about the size of a basketball course whatever the size is that they are. Don't need it too large since speedball is fast play.

I am too old and decrepit to be diving behind the snake (damn my back) but I can appreciate it when the whippersnappers do it.
Your telling me. My knee has gotten progressivly worse so I enjoy just finding some spot to hide and wait instead of sprinting like mad from one point to another. I love it when someones 2ft from ya and they dont have a clue your there.

Good deal. Maybe you can make it a serious business venture. Ya never know.
In my neck of the woods (hahahehe woodsballers joke) I've been working a massive amount of hours so I treated myself to a new A-5 that is going to take over for my aging '98. I'm gonna switch the '98 back to single shot and make it a sniper rifle again and make the A-5 my auto with a E-trigger.
Both guns
Closeup of the A-5
Just so happens I got a game tomorrow at the bridge. I'm gonna take some pictures so you can get a visual of one of the terrains I play on.

Only problem I've had with the cyclone on the '98 was chopped balls due to the response trigger. E-trigger will comes with an eye so it won't fire unless it register a ball in the chamber. My main reason for wanting to put the '98 back to single shot.
Unfortunatly with a E-trigger I gotta watch out for wetness so no diving into the river like I can with my '98.
I got a chance to use a friends A-5 which seriously looks like a SAW and I fell in love with it not to mention it can clean a hopper in seconds. I'm still debating wehter I wanna go that route and carry a 30lb gun or go for a smaller mp5 type look.

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 14/10/2007 06:11:02 Heres a picture of one of the fields I play on. I marked out some of the key areas that makes it challenging for us. Maybe this could help for some ideas for a field.
As you can see, you've got the 2 main bunkers with a rather open, somewhat entrenched area in the middle. 'Woodside' can provide cover from both bunkers. There are also a few entrenchments within the trees for added cover. People can also go 'river side' and try to loop all the way around in back of either of the 2 bunkers. And in some cases the team at bunker 2 choose to run into the deeper, thicker woods with limited monility and visibility and set up an ambush instead of direct confrontation. And it's not in the picture but theres a second hill by bunker 1 on the other side of the ravine that is full of sagebrush which makes for some interesting cat and mouse.
